A career as a real estate can be gratifying, but there are some essential things to think about before you take the leap.   1. The first thing you will have to do is take a serious look at your family’s finances, as becoming a real estate agent costs money. You will need to pay for courses and testing, and once you are a real estate agent, you will have to pay your dues and membership to your local Realtors Association. Real estate agents are paid when they are involved in a sale and only when that sale closes, so it will likely be at least 6 months before you see any income.
  2. Do you enjoy sales, and do you have any sales experience, as a lot of real estate success is based on sales techniques. You are going to have to convince sellers that you are the best person to sell their home, and you will have to convince buyers to choose you as the one to help them find their new home.

3 Decide if you are willing to work on the weekends and in the evenings: Many meetings with potential clients, showings, and open houses take place outside of normal business hours. To be successful, you will need to be willing to work at these times.

When you become a real estate agent, you will have to motivate yourself; your brokerage will not be watching your every move, and no one will be forcing you to get out of bed to go to work; so you have to be the type of person who is motivated to succeed. Being extremely goal-oriented is a big plus.
  3. Consider your experience with business administration and paperwork: Once you have clients, a lot of your work will be completing paperwork: The amount of papers for just one sale is staggering. If you enjoy this kind of work, you will find that you enjoy real estate much more.
  4. Are you willing to work hard now, for results to arrive much later? New real estate agents often must work in the office answering phones and host open houses for other agents to find clients. These activities pay off in the long run but can feel like a lot of work for no pay at first. Just like any business owner, you must be willing to put in the time to reap the rewards as a real estate agent.
  5. Do you have any experience in construction? It is not required, but the more you know about home construction and materials, the better able you will assist your clients. If you do not know much about home materials or construction, you should be willing to learn as much as you can.
  6. Do you have patience, and are you a people person? You will be dealing with lots of people, all with different personalities, so being able to get along well with others will be key to your success.
  7. Are you comfortable with the internet; do you have any experience with creating and maintaining a website or a blog? Something like 75% of real estate searches start on the internet, so you are much more likely to be successful if you have a solid internet presence.
  8. Really think about your money management and budgeting skills: When you become a real estate agent, you will be paid when you close deals. That means that you may earn a lot of money in one month and then not earn anything for three months. You must be able to manage your money so that you do not end up broke, a week after you close a sale and get paid.
  9. Lastly, do you have office equipment at home or a car that you can use to get to, or transport clients to, showings? You do not absolutely need to have a fully stocked office at home, but it will make doing your job much more enjoyable and straightforward.
